Prakrutik Dang: Organic Revolution in Gujarat by FPOs
Nestled in the eastern reaches of Gujarat lies the verdant district of Dang, a land steeped in tradition and inhabited predominantly by tribal communities. Recently, Dang has emerged as a pioneering force in the realm of agriculture, earning the distinction of being declared Gujarat’s first Prakruti District Dang—a testament to its commitment to organic farming practices.
The journey towards organic excellence began with a visionary initiative by the state government to transform Dang into a 100 per cent organic farming district. Recognizing the imperative to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable agricultural practices, the government embarked on a mission to incentivize farmers to eschew chemical fertilizers and pesticides in favor of organic alternatives.
Central to this endeavor is the provision of a substantial subsidy of Rs 10,000 per hectare, extending to a maximum of two hectares per farmer. This financial support serves as a catalyst for the widespread adoption of organic farming techniques across Dang’s predominantly hilly terrain.
Dang district has witnessed a remarkable transition towards organic cultivation. With nearly 70 to 80 per cent of the cultivable land already embracing traditional farming methods, Dang stands as a beacon of sustainability in Gujarat’s agricultural landscape.

Traditionally, Dang’s farmers have relied on time-honored agricultural practices, cultivating rice and millet (nagali)—staple foods integral to the local diet. While some pockets of the district utilized chemical fertilizers for rice cultivation, the government’s subsidy scheme aims to mitigate the financial burden on farmers transitioning to organic methods.
The scheme, meticulously overseen by the district administration, has provided vital support to over 12,000 farmers, enabling them to embrace a future rooted in organic agriculture. Encouragingly, farmers are not only embracing organic fertilizers but are also harnessing the power of cow dung and urine—a testament to their holistic approach to farming.
Crucially, the journey towards organic excellence extends beyond cultivation to marketing. Collaborating with state agricultural agencies, the government endeavors to certify Dang’s organic produce, facilitating its distribution both within Gujarat and beyond. By ensuring the authenticity and quality of organic goods, Dang’s farmers can tap into a burgeoning market demand for sustainable, ethically sourced products.
The transformation of Dang into Gujarat’s first Prakruti Dang District symbolizes more than just an agricultural revolution; it embodies a profound commitment to environmental stewardship, community resilience, and rural empowerment. As Dang blazes a trail towards organic excellence, its story serves as a testament to the transformative power of sustainable agriculture in shaping a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
